Imagine, if
you will, a very large skyscraper building reaching high into the sky
and on
its top floor there is a very large open area that is full of people
doing all
kinds of things. To the people on this floor everything appears normal,
but
unknown to them the building is in fact on fire and is a raging inferno
and the
fire has nearly reached their level. Now, in the large crowd there is a
man who
knows about the impending danger and is trying to warn them. Let us now go there and see what takes place:
-
The man
looked at the large number of people and was amazed to find that they
were all
carrying on as normal, because the fire sirens had been sounding out
for a long
time now. The loud sound from the sirens
was piercing to his ears, but the people acted as thought it was not
there, it
was as thought they were selectively deaf to the piercing sound and
could not
to hear its warning. How could they not hear it, he though to himself,
it’s so
loud and clear, it’s unmistakable in its warning to get out of the
building
immediately and get to a place of safety. He
looked in the centre of the floor area and
there were a large number of people having a really wild party. They
were eating
and drinking, most were drunk and the men and women were all flirting
with each
other. There was a lot of laughing and cheering, but no one was taking
any heed
of the warning sound from the sirens. The man made his way over to them
and
said: “Why are you all still here? Can’t you hear the sound from the
fire
sirens? The building is on fire, you need to get out: Now! Look, over
there,
there is a small window, it’s on the narrow side, but there is a
fireman there
who will save you from the flames, just go to him and he will save
you.” The men
and women just laughed at the man and looked at him as if he was mad.
One said:
“Don’t be daft, can you smell any smoke, can you see any flames?”
Another said:
“I’ve heard the siren many times before, it’s just a false alarm,
there’s
nothing to worry about”. And another said: “I did hear the sirens years
ago,
but now I’m tone deaf and can’t hear a thing.” The man then repeated
his
warning and said: “Believe me, the building is on fire, you need to get
out: Now!
Look, over there, there is a small window, it’s on the narrow side, but
there
is a fireman there who will save you from the flames, just go to him
and he
will save you.” Then two of them, drunk with drink, in a rage of anger,
kicked
and punched the man and said: “Get away from us, you’re crazy, there’s
no fire.”
The others did nothing to stop it, but just watched and laughed,
saying: “We’re
having the time of our lives and having so much fun and we don’t need
you to
spoil it.” The man then left them to continue their wild party.
He then
looked over to the far corner and saw a man sitting in front of a
computer
screen and made his way over to him. As he came over to him, he looked
at the
computer screen and could see that he was busy buying and selling on
EBay. He
then said to him: “Why are you still here? Can’t you hear the sound
from the
fire sirens? The building is on fire.” The man then replied: “Just look
at this
purchase, isn’t it a real beauty.” He then warned him again: “The
building is
on fire, you need to get out: Now! Look, over there, there is a small
window,
it’s on the narrow side, but there is a fireman there who will save you
from
the flames, just go to him and he will save you.” The man replied: “I can’t go now; I’m just about to make a
whole lot of money for the sale of these items.” The
man just wouldn’t listen and so he left
him to his financial pursuits.
He then
looked over to the other corner and saw two men standing together
dressed as Bridegrooms and
in front of them was a Vicar from the local Church. He made his way
over to
them and said: “Why are you still here? Can’t you hear the sound from
the fire
sirens? The building is on fire, you need to get out: Now! Look, over
there,
there is a small window, it’s on the narrow side, but there is a
fireman there
who will save you from the flames, just go to him and he will save
you.” The
Vicar said: “These two men are about to be joined in a Civil
Partnership, which
is a marriage in all but name.” Then, one of the two men replied: “We
are so
proud to be gay and this is the proudest and happiest day of our lives
and we
want every one to know it.” “Don’t you know that God destroyed Sodom
and
Gomorrah with fire for such practices?” Then one of the Bridegrooms
said to
him: “We don’t believe that part of the Bible, God loves everyone, even
the
gays and even our Vicar is gay. We don’t accept what you say.” The man
warned
them again about the impending fiery destruction, but they just refused
to
listen, or take heed, so he left them to their marriage ceremony.
He then
looked over to the other corner and saw a man with a prayer mat and
recognised
him. He was a Muslim, a man of high standing and much loved in the
community.
The man was a dedicated and devoted follower of Islam, who had attended
the
Hajj, was always present at the Mosque for Friday prayers, never failed
in his
daily prayers and always observed Ramadan.
He also gave much to the community, especially to the poor and
homeless.
He went over to him and said: “Hello! Why are you still here? Don’t you
hear
the sound from the fire sirens? The building is on fire, you need to
get out: Now!
Look, over there, there is a small window, it’s on the narrow side, but
there
is a fireman there who will save you from the flames, just go to him
and he
will save you.” The Muslim replied: “I know you, you’re the Christian,
I
believe in the Prophet Mohammad, blessings and peace be upon his name.
We
believe that Jesus was a Prophet too, but don’t accept him as the Son
of God.”
He then said to the Muslim: “Your dedication to Islam is admirable;
however,
there is only one who has paid the price for our sins and that is Jesus
and the
Bible is very clear that he is the only way to the Father and that he
is the
Son of God. But listen; take heed, the building is on fire. Look, over
there,
there is a small window, it’s on the narrow side, but there is a
fireman there
who will save you from the flames, just go to him and he will save
you.” But he
replied, I can’t go now, I have to wash myself and get ready to do my
prayers.”
The Muslim would not come, but went away to wash and prepare himself
for his
prayers.
He then
looked in the other corner and saw a young woman with a child in her
arms and
she lit a candle which was in front of a statue of the Virgin Mary. He
went
over to her and as he came close he heard her praying to the statue:
“Mary
mother of God, pray for us sinners.” The man then said to her: “Woman,
why are
you still here? Can’t you hear the sound from the fire sirens? The
building is
on fire, you need to get out: Now! Look, over there, there is a small
window,
it’s on the narrow side, but there is a fireman there who will save you
from
the flames, just go to him and he will save you.” The woman replied “I
always pray
to Mary and believe in the
It was time
to leave and as the man made his way to the fireman, he noticed a man
nearby
the window who was handcuffed to the pipes there. He was a prisoner,
found
guilty and condemned, waiting to be taken away to serve his sentence.
He came
up to him and said: “Why are you still here? Can’t you hear the sound
from the
fire sirens? The building is on fire, you need to get out: Now! Look,
over
there, there is a small window, it’s on the narrow side, but there is a
fireman
there who will save you from the flames, just go to him and he will
save you.” In
tears and in great distress, he replied: “I hear the sirens, I don’t
want to
perish in the flames, but I’m a prisoner and cannot get to the window,
because
of these handcuffs.” He replied to the prisoner: I can’t set you free,
or save
you, but the fireman can, call out to him and he will come to you and
set you
free. Follow him and he will save you from the flames.” The prisoner
called out
to the fireman and with a loud voice cried out to him: “Fireman! Help!
Save me!”
Immediately the fireman came to him, set him free and led him through
the
narrow window and out to safety. The man followed. Moments later, the
flames
burst through to the top floor and all the people screamed and tried to
save
themselves. Many tried to reach for the small, marrow window but were
beaten
back by the intense heat of the flames and all perished and were
consumed in
the fire. Besides the man, only the prisoner was saved and only because
the
fireman saved them.
The fireman
represents Jesus Christ, the only one who can save us from your sins.
We are
all prisoners to sin and Jesus is the only one who can set us free from
our
sins, because he is the only one who has paid the full price for our
sins by
his death and resurrection. The sound of the sirens is the sound of the
Gospel
that has gone out into all the World, warning people of the coming
judgement of
God and of the Salvation of God, through Jesus Christ. The fire
represents
death and Hell and the top floor of the skyscraper represents this
World as it
is today: Eating, drinking, marring, buying, selling, violent, wicked
and
corrupt. The four corners are the uttermost parts of the Earth, to
which God’s
grace and Love extends through the Gospel of Salvation. The small,
narrow
window represents the way to life and the broad large space of the top
floor is
the way to destruction, death and hell. Almost all people are on the
broad path
to Hell, few are on the narrow path to life everlasting.
“For
God so
loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever
believeth
in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” John 3:16
“But these
are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of
God;
and that believing ye might have life through his name.” John 20:31
